The Austrian Biotech Industry (ABI) has as its ambition, to give the public as well as policy makers an understanding of the potential and the requirements of biotechnology. Membership of this special interest group domiciled in the Federation of the chemical industry of Austria comprises well-established companies working in the field of biotechnology as well as young start-up companies. ABI represents about 95% of the Austrian value creation of biotech activities.
The sustainable growth of this dynamic economic sector depends on investments in research and development. Accompaning that, a general framework of corresponding economic and science policy has to be established.
Current activities of ABI concern primarily patent and gene technology regulation. Furthermore ABI advocates the enhancement of the availability of venture captial for innovating companies.
Also ABI offers sound scientific information for balanced opinion formation.
Harmonising the claims of well-established and star-up anna companies for supporting policy measures is a unique feature of ABI, which leads the way in Europe in this respect.
