The Austrian Biotech Industry (ABI) is a special interest group of the local biotech companies. It represents 95 % of the Austrian value creation. Its membership consists of well-established companies as well as of young start-ups. |

The biotech sector developped to the economic jewel in the crown of Austria as a location for business. Distributed all over Austria some competence clusters and unique production sites were established. |
| Results of the Data Collection Biotech in Austria |
For creating awareness of the tremendous future chances of the sector and for establishing a sound basis for argumentation, ABI has initiated an annual collection of economic data from Austrian companies. |
| 7300 Employess in the Biotech sector. One Quarter of which in R&D |
In Austria there exist about 75 companies, which are active in the field of Biotechnology according to OECD definition. 2006 the sector employed 7300 employees, which is an increase of about 5 % campared to 2005. 1800 persons, which is about 8.5 % more than 2005, are employed in research and development. |
| Turnover at 1,9 Billion Euro |
Overall the turnover of the sector amounted to about 1.9 billion Euros, this a plus of about 14 % compared to 2005. 1.65 billion Euros are achieved with products of red biotechnology (pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and advances therapies). About 250 million Euros were generated wiht products of white biotechnology (enzymes, food additives etc). Biofuels were not included in the survey. |

| Reserach Strenght at 18 %, which is to be increased |
Companies spent about 345 Million Euro, on research and development, which corresponds to an increase of more than 25 % compared to 2005. Although the research strength has risen to 20%, internationally Austria can`t keep up. In the USA the corresponding value reaches nearly 50 %, in the European neighbour countries it is above 30%. To reach this level is the goal, which Austria has to aim at in the years to come. |
| Investments |
2006 the whole sector invested 128 million Euro - this is an increase of more than 100 % compared to 2005, in new production plants and research facilities. |
| Biotechnology is a Driver of Innovation |
Facing that, biotechnology is not only a job generator but also an innovation driver. The number of patent applications in 2006 summed up to 110, whereas the number of pending patents were about 2000. The increase of the number patent applications compared to 2005 was more than 35 %. |
